California Proposition 65

Why this warning appears

California's Proposition 65 requires businesses to warn Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Natural stone, porcelain and ceramic tile contain crystalline silica. Installed tile is not a hazard, but cutting, grinding, drilling or polishing tile and stone can release fine silica dust that can be inhaled.

Reduce your exposure

• Cut tile and stone with wet-cutting tools whenever possible.
• Work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors, and use dust collection.
• Wear a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator and eye protection when cutting or grinding.
• Clean up dust with a HEPA vacuum or wet methods, not dry sweeping.
